It was the first moon after the rising of Matariki that is widely viewed as the starting of the Maori new year. It was a time of plenty; the crops had been stored and tribes were engaged in fishing and birding. - Hapimana Rikihana
After lunch the whanau classes carried on celebrating Matariki by participating in some Maori games, ti rakau, and designing a poster for Maori language week.

On Friday 15th June, most of Nelson Central school celebrated Matariki by having a massive shared kai. Our class and rm15 started the event by welcoming the other participating classes with a haka powhiri. Once this was over it was kai time, and there was lots of kai.

The day was a great success and lots of fun!
